Youth discusses SA’s political landscape in GPL’s voter education campaign

Jun 30, 2023 | Let's Talk GPL Newsletter, Voter Education

As a non-partisan State organization, the GPL has a fundamental responsibility to educate the people of Gauteng about the importance of democratic elections and their participation in them. This responsibility is related to the Legislature’s duty as the lawmaker and overseer of provincial government efficiency in Gauteng – a role the GPL fulfils without bias to any political party as required by the Constitution.

And with the 2024 national elections around the corner, the GPL has partnered with the IEC, Stats SA, as well as Gauteng Departments of COGTA, Home Affairs and Education to deliver its Voter Education & Registration campaign. The campaign is driven by the GPL’s Presiding Officers and largely targets the youth aged between 18 and 35 who – according to national statistics – make up the largest cohort of the country’s population.

It is delivered in different formats including a province-wide schools’ debate competition, public plenary sessions, road shows and activations, university visits, and others.

The goal of the campaign is to get the youth of Gauteng talking about their crucial participation in the lections as those whose future depends on the wellbeing of South Africa’s democracy.

Targeting different Gauteng regions, the campaign will continue until President Cyril Ramaphosa announces the 2024 election date.
