Chairperson, Dr Bandile Masuku, said this collaboration was “long overdue” in efforts to fight crime and enforce municipal by-laws in the Johannesburg, Tshwane, and Ekurhuleni metros.

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is responsible for enforcing residents by-law adherence regarding land invasions, street trading, waste management, electricity and advertising.

In from April 2022 to March 2023, JMPD stopped 30246 cars and searched about 102481 of them along with 96256 people. They impounded about 791 cars in total after finding them

Unroadworthy.

Similar to JMPD, the Tshwane (TMPD) and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) enforce the same by-laws in their territories.

In the same period stated above, they conducted 64 regional by-law policing operations and 34 specialized by-law policing operations. They also carried out 41 regional illegal dumping operations and 25 regional cable theft operations.

EMPD arrest 1123 criminals, conducting 80 crime prevention plans, attended to 51 city by-law violations, and issued 292 903 traffic fines for violations.

This collaboration looks to bring onboard the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) to regulate security service providers. Working with the South African Police Services (SAPS), PSIRA ensures that private security providers adhere to a code of conduct and meet minimum standards.
