On 14 August 2024, the Health and Wellness Portfolio Committee convened led by Chairperson Ezra Letsoalo convened at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature for their first in-person meeting since the beginning of the 7th term of administration. This gathering provided an opportunity to formally introduce the committee members and address significant agenda items, focusing on ongoing projects and departmental updates.
One of the key topics discussed was the status of unfinished infrastructure projects that have been under the committee’s oversight since the previous term. Both the Departments of Health and Wellness and Infrastructure Development were represented at the meeting by respective MECs and senior management. The committee decided that a follow-up report would be presented in September, alongside a revised implementation plan to address these unfinished projects.
Additionally, the committee reviewed the Department of Health’s 4th quarterly report for the 2023/24 financial year. A notable highlight in the department’s finances was a significant decline in medico-legal claims, which have decreased from R18 billion to R11 billion. This reduction marks a positive trend in managing legal liabilities within the department.
