Eunice Moloko’s bloodied body was discovered hidden on 10 August 2021 in the toilet of her office at the Leeuwkop Correctional Service. Ms Moloko was 50 years old, worked as a prison warder since 1998, and leaves behind her husband and two children. It is reported that she was raped and strangled. Her lifeless body was discovered by her husband who works at the same correctional center, about 13 hours after she passed.
The MPWC acknowledges the following: investigations currently underway by the Department of Correctional Services; a case opened with SAPS; and that a suspect, also an inmate, has been charged. However, the MPWC believes that a further inquiry needs to be undertaken to especially investigate security measures surrounding the case. Particularly, that she was working at a covid isolation site during the time of her murder. In addition, for the first time in the history of correctional services a warder, especially a woman, appears to have been left to work alone in a section of a prison.
As a South African society, we need to humanise gender- based violence (GBV), even amidst the high levels of GBV cases. Eunice Moloko: we must remember her name!
