COMMITTEE WELCOMES SOCIAL RELIEF OF DISTRESS GRANT REINSTATEMENT

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development has welcomed reinstatement of the Social Relief of Distress Grant; as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his address to the nation on the 25th July 2021.

The Portfolio Committee further welcomes the expansion of beneficiaries for this grant; as unemployed caregivers who are currently receiving the child support grant are now also eligible for the Distress Grant.

The Portfolio Committee encourages all persons eligible for this R350 per month grant to apply once the resumption date is confirmed and application channels are announced. Each prior grant recipient will have to again go through the application process and confirm their details.

The Corona Virus has had devastating effects on the most vulnerable people in our communities, who battle the scourge of poverty daily.
The Committee is confident that this intervention aimed at easing the burdens of poverty facing many South Africans came at the right time and will go a long way in supporting many households to attain some basic goods and services.
