INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REVISITS MAYIBUYE PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development & Property Management will on Tuesday, 7 November 2023 revisit Mayibuye Primary School in Tembisa to assess if there has been any progress made to ensure that the school is occupied by learners since its completion in 2017.

Previously, the Committee conducted an oversight visit at the school only to establish that the R82 million school stood as a white elephant years after its completion.  Allegations were that the school was built on a waterlogged site and that the City of Johannesburg could not issue an Occupancy Certificate as this would pose as a health and safety hazard for the learners and educators occupying it.

Seven (7) years later, it has become apparent to the Committee that the school remains unoccupied prompting the Committee to revisit the school to establish if there has been in any progress in remedying the situation and holding those responsible accountable.

The Committee will also on the same day visit New Kempton Park High School (Kempton Park) and Lake Side Primary School (Boksburg).  Both these schools are also alleged to be experiencing Infrastructure Development challenges such as poor workmanship and delays in completion of projects.

The oversight visits will be followed by a Committee meeting where the Department of Infrastructure Development as well as the Education Department will appear before the Committee to give an account on these projects.
