COMMITTEE WELCOMES REALLOCATION OF 28 WEST RAND HOUSES TO FAMILIES DISPLACED BY FLOODS
The Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements has welcomed the reallocation of 28 houses to owners of West Rand homes that were affected by floods between 2019 and 2023.
The Department reported this to the Committee on Tuesday 25 July 2023, following consistent monitoring of plans to reaccommodate families displaced by floods. The Committee has closely monitored this process as part of its oversight role on the Department.
The Department reported that when ten (10) family homes were washed away during the 2019 floods, the Mogale City Local Municipality’s Housing Department arranged a temporarily relocation of affected families to housing projects in the West Rand. And when more torrential rains and flooding struck again in November 2022 and January 2023, a total of nine (9) additional families lost their homes.
The Department has since reallocated new houses to all affected families from the following housing projects: eight (8) at Kagiso Extension 13; seven (7) at Dan Tlome; and 13 at Brickvalley.
The Department informed the Committee that the Mogale City’s Building Control Unit was yet to issue the demolition permit to avoid re-occupation of vacant houses.
