On Friday, 15 July 2022 the Gauteng Provincial Legislature will host this year’s Children’s Sector Parliament at the Ferndale Recreational Hall.

This is a platform for children in the province to make their challenges known to the Premier and Gauteng Government Departments. It is made possible by the GPL as part of its work to hold the provincial government accountable to Gauteng’s people.

Children and organisations that speak for their rights will propose their own solutions and demand action from the Provincial Government.

The main purpose of this sector parliament is to empower children to participate in the legislative processes. To encourage the born-free generation to be part of influencing and shaping good governance in the post 21 years of South Africa in democracy. To allow children to demonstrate their understanding and show the responsibilities for the freedom and rights they have in exercising democracy.

Topics to be discussed on the day include:

  • The impact of bullying in schools and repercussions on long-term learning
  • An assessment of challenges faced by learners during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • How to curb teenage drinking
